A Rare Antique 19th Century Broadside Describing A Terrifying Event Over Hull. Framed In Period Frame With The Addition Of Conservation Glass, Which Protects It From UVA Rays And Gives Only 3% Reflection, So It Almost Looks Invisible.
This 19th-century broadside or poster describes a terrifying event in the sky over Hull… was it the Northern Lights, or something more ominous?”
It describes the following:
“A perfect blood red flag was seen in the elements flying over the town…”
“It changed its form… assuming that of a cross, a sword, and many other fantastic shapes.”
“The town was nearly as light as at noon-day… fear and dismay featured their faces.”
“It became for a few seconds a total darkness…”
“It appears that many sights were seen in the heavens… some say they are tokens of war, others, pestilence and famine.”
Some called it a sign from God… others saw it as a natural wonder. Today, we’d likely call it the northern lights, but in 1800s Hull, it was a terrifying omen.
Condition is decent, commensurate with age and use. Very thin paper. Small hole to towards the top, as photographed.
