Rare antique tortoiseshell “wig” spectacles with pale green lenses, circa late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.
Hand-carved from tortoiseshell, these early reading glasses were designed with shorter temples to prevent them from getting caught in a gentleman’s powdered wig. Optometrists from the eighteenth century and well into the nineteenth claimed blue or green-tinted lenses improved vision. The spectacles have silver fittings and hinges. Exquisite craftsmanship and timeless design.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and glass is good.
