Rare Antique Early 19th Century Green-Tinted Tortoiseshell And Silver Spectacles With Original Case Which Itself Has Beautiful Decorations.
Hand-carved from tortoiseshell, it was believed that blue or green-tinted lenses improved vision. The spectacles have silver fittings and hinges. Exquisite craftsmanship and timeless design.
At the time, it was common for physicians to recommend colored lenses, including green, to treat ailments like eye fatigue or sensitivity caused by diseases like syphilis, which could affect vision.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and glass is good. Some age related scuffing and wear to the end of the arms.
