A Rare Antique Victorian Folk Art Snake Made From 1000’s Of Postage Stamps, Mostly Penny Reds. I Have Owned One Before, But That Was Only 74cm’s In Length. This One Is An Incredible 134cm Long!! It Has A Brown Velvet Head And Tail, A Red Fabric Tongue And Two Eyes. Because Of Tue Shear Amount Of Stamps Uses To Make It, It Is Actually Quite A Weighty Piece.
The Victorians were recycling and reusing a century before any of us. Everyday objects like wishbones, spools and nut shells were all given a new life as fanciful, yet functional art objects. All the rage in the 19th century, this crafty trend of turning trash into tiny treasures resulted in Victorian fancies.
Stamps were one popular way for those who couldn’t afford luxuries to make playthings and this is a superb example!
Condition is commensurate with age. Structurally sound. Some wear around the neck join but very good all things considered.
