A Fabulous Rare Antique Victorian Medical Teaching Aid Exploded Real Human Skull In Period Box. Unfortunately, This Is Missing The All Important Wire Stand, But All Pieces Of The Skull Are Still There. It Still Makes For A Wild Piece For A Collector’s Cabinet Of Curiosities. Alternatively, It Could Be Wired Together For An Exceptional Piece Of Macabre Art! Just Look How Well It Has Photographed!

Victorians used to blow up human and animals skulls to teach medical students about anatomy. It was believed that Edmé François Chauvot de Beauchêne invented the exploding method.

This would have originally been on a wire stand that will have been filled with cogs and wires, allowing for the expansion and contraction of the skull. Essentially, you’d have been able to explode the skull out and then put it back together again, so you could see where the various vessels and channels are for nerves and blood vessels moving within the bones, and what the nature of the sutures between the bones was like.

You can imagine how important that would be for medicine, but also for all aspects of biology, for looking for characters for evolutionary relationships, for understanding growth and the relation between form and function.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Unfortunately, as explained, this is missing the all important wire stand, but all pieces of the skull appear to still be there. There is also a small repair to the lower jaw. Therefore, this is sold as seen.
