A Very Rare WW1 Pierrot Doll Memento Mori Matchbox Holder.
In 1915, Private Frank Hinnels was killed whilst fighting in Gallipoli. Naturally, his family were devastated. His two aunts, Esther Ennels Hinnel and Alice Maria Hinnel, in remembrance of their nephew and to support the soldiers, began making and selling the Pierrot Dolls as matchbox holders. They sold them in the Assembly Rooms in Bury St. Edmunds.
They were made with black ribbon, with ruffled satin, three buttons and a celluloid body. Both boy and girl dolls were made.
These are so rare that I know of only one other that has survived, a boy figure which is displayed in the local Bury St Edmunds Museum.
This figure still contains its original matchbox and matches.
It’s a somber reflection on a family’s affection for their loved one.
Condition is good, commensurate with age. Some minor discolouration to the white satin. Structurally sound and functions well.
