A Superb Antique Early 19th Century Hand Crafted Pine Drop Down Mouse Trap, With Oak Weight, c.1820. Wonderful Colour, Wear And Patina That Only Comes Through The Passage Of Time. It Carries A Lovely Folk Art Aesthetic And Displays Magnificently.

These Traps Relied On A Simple But Effective Mechanism. A Baited String Or Trigger Held Up A Wooden Weight And When The Mouse Disturbed The Bait, The Oak Weight Dropped, Causing A Horrible End.

As With Many Vernacular Tools Of The Period, It Was Built Entirely From Locally Available Timber, With Hand-Cut Joinery And Simple Pegs Rather Than Metal Hardware. The Irregular Shaping, Tool Marks, And Deep Honeyed Patina Reflect Both Its Age And Its Origin As Practical Folk Craftsmanship Rather Than Commercial Manufacture.

Condition is decent, commensurate with age and use. There is a repair across the top of the front panel and various splits and cracks to the wood.
