A Marvellous Antique 19th Century Brass And Leather Monkey Collar With Padlock.
Monkey collars were used in Europe and North America for both pet monkeys kept by wealthy households and trained monkeys used by street performers, such as organ grinders in cities like London, Paris and New York.
They were commonly used with small trained species such as Capuchin Monkeys that performed tricks or collected coins from spectators.
A wonderful piece of social history, reflecting the era’s fascination with exotic pets and performing animals.
Condition is decent. Lots of knocks and dents commensurate with age and having been well used. A very tiny split as photographed.
