A Marvelous Antique 19th Century Gaming Or Gambling Glass Engraved With ‘Success To The Renown’ And An Image Of A Schooner Ship.
The inscription “Success to the Renown” and the engraved image of a schooner ship commemorate the Royal Navy or merchant vessel Renown, a name carried by several notable British ships active during the late 18th and Napoleonic periods.
My hunch is that it relates to HMS Renown (1798-1835). She was launched at the height of the French Revolutionary Wars and served through the Napoleonic Wars, a period when the Royal Navy dominated global sea power. As a third rate ship of the line, she carried 74 guns on two decks, the workhorse class of Nelson’s navy, combining heavy firepower with manoeuvrability. After nearly four decades of service, Renown was broken up in 1835.
Ships like HMS Renown symbolised Britain’s naval supremacy during the Napoleonic era. Officers and civilians often commissioned engraved “toast” glasses inscribed with the ship’s name and motto, such as “Success to the Renown”, to celebrate her commissioning, a victorious cruise, or to honour friends serving aboard.
Encased within the base of this example are loose dice, a novelty feature associated with gambling and convivial drinking. After toasting the ship’s success, participants might tilt the glass to reveal the dice outcome.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound with no issues aside from a small nibble to a bottom edge (photographed).
