A Very Rare Georgian Ceramic New Born Baby Gift Ceramic Egg, (c.1780–1830).
This is a rare example of a late Georgian ceramic new born baby gift, traditionally given to women after childbirth as a token of blessing for the newborn. Typically handcrafted from glazed earthenware and often containing a loose silver coin, such as a sixpence or shilling, these symbolic gifts were meant to wish the child health, happiness, and future prosperity. With its hand-painted decoration and internal coin, this piece reflects a now lost folk custom blending fertility symbolism with early 19th century domestic ritual.
A rare survivor!
Condition is good, commensurate with age. Structurally sound, with no obvious chips or cracks. Some craquelure on the glaze which is common in older glazed ceramics and consistent with 18th–19th century aging.
