A Curious Vintage Belgian Carnival Mask. I Have Two Of These In Stock Currently. Both Were Discovered In The Drawer Of A Piece Of Antique Furniture Imported To The UK From Belgium.
Rather Obscure, They Date To Around The First Half Of The 20th Century And Likely Relate To The Carnival Of Binche. An Annual Festival Held During The Sunday, Monday And Tuesday Preceding Ash Wednesday.
The first written records of the Carnival of Binche date back to 1394. Wearing a mask was forbidden under the Napoleonic regime, so the Gilles, some of the carnival's most important participants today, appeared for the first time in texts in 1795 as masked characters revolting.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
