A Superb Vintage Naive Folk Art Portrait Oil On Board Painting By Undiscovered Folk Artist Ian. W. Edwards 1947-2024.
Edwards Lived In Wales For A Time And Then North Shields. I Understand He Enjoyed Painting In His Spare Time, With The Majority Of His Works Being Paintings Of His Friends And Family. It Is Apparent They Were A Very Important Part Of His Life.
This Particular Painting Is Believed To Be Of His Wife.
Edwards’ Work Is Very Naive, But Excellent At The Same Time. It Appears He Painted On Whatever He Could Find, From Old Bits Of Board To Pieces Of Kitchen Units And Sideboards. He Used Old Shoe Laces And Bits Of Old Rope To Hang The Paintings. In The Same Make-Do Manner, Edwards Mounted His Works In Cobbled Together Frames Made Up Of Misshapen Pieces Of Old Wood, Which Were Then Painted.
There Are Versions Of Some Of The Same Portraits, Which Is Fascinating Because You Can See How He Has Practiced Certain Techniques Or Positions In Order To Get The Portraits Just Right. This Makes It Very Interesting To View Them Together.
Edwards Sadly Passed Away In 2024 And These Works Were All Discovered In A Room At His Home In North Shields During A House Clearance.
Edwards Is An Undiscovered Amateur Artist Whose Works Are Charming In Every Sense Of The Word. Paintings Of His Beloved Friends And Family, Done In An Endearing Style. The Make-Do Manner Of His Canvases And Framing Is The Piest De Resistance.
Edwards Won’t Be Undiscovered For Much Longer!
Condition is good, commensurate with age and the artist’s naive, make-do style.
