A World War 2 Sterling Silver Child’s Identity Bracelet.
These were worn by children during the Second World War and were designed to help reunite children with their families in the event that they were separated during air raids.
This example belonged to a Maurice Harland who was born and raised in the village of Grewelthorpe near Ripon.
In the summer of 1943, Maurice and 2 friends were outside playing and found 2 bombs in a field. Maurice and his friends took the 2 bombs home, Maurice taking 1 and his friends taking the other. They hid them in drawers in their homes.
Later, Maurice’s friends decided to take their bomb apart to see how it worked. The bomb exploded and killed them instantly.
Maurice, on hearing the news, panicked and buried his bomb in the garden.
Maurice was interviewed later in life and said that “luck was with me on this occasion, but I seemed to bear the burden of the tragedy, with a distinct feeling with the attitude in the village that I was to blame. Perhaps I was wrong, I hope so…”
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. No issues.
